After receiving more than 240 nominations, MSTA Member Melissa Grandel of Fordland High was named the 2020 Missouri Teacher of the Year by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in a ceremony Wednesday afternoon.

Per DESE’s press release: “Grandel has been selected by a committee of her peers and agency partners as the 2020 Missouri Teacher of the Year. She becomes the 51st Missouri Teacher of the Year since the program’s inception in 1957 and marks the first winner to come from the Fordland R-III district.”

Last week, we video chatted with Grandel to discuss her teaching philosophy and why she rises to the occasion everyday.

Grandel will serve as Missouri’s representative in the National Teacher of the Year program. She will be honored at a banquet in Jefferson City on Monday, Oct. 21, along with the other six finalists, semifinalists and regional teachers of the year. Previously, five MSTA members were among the seven finalists for the honor.
