If you are a probationary teacher who is job shopping, keep these rules in mind. The district where you currently are employed must notify you in writing by April 15 if it is not going to renew your contract. However, it may offer written notice of renewal at any earlier time as long as you are tendered a contract by May 15.
If you are offered a new contract and want to accept it, you must present the board with a written acceptance within 15 days. If you do not respond in writing, it is considered a rejection of the renewal offer. If you have accepted any offer of employment in writing, you are legally bound by that agreement for its term, which usually is one year.
What if you receive a better offer after you sign the contract? You simply cannot assume that you will be released from a contract. Check the district’s policy on early release before you make a legal commitment.
