The April 15 deadline to not renew a teacher is approaching. Remember that nonrenewals are not necessarily based on performance as reflected by your performance-based teacher evaluations, also called PBTEs, or other records.
State law requires a district to conduct a comprehensive, performance-based evaluation for each teacher, but your evaluations may irrelevant to the district’s decision unless you are being nonrenewed for incompetency or inefficiency.
You may use your high PBTE marks to help persuade a principal to recommend you for rehire or you may use your own good evaluations to present to prospective employers. The district, meanwhile, must maintain the evaluation in your confidential personnel file.
