The State Board of Education recently announced that the search for a new Commissioner would begin on Wednesday, Sept. 19 The Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education serves as the chief executive officer to the board and is the director of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The responsibility for employing and terminating the Commissioner is guaranteed to the State Board in the Missouri Constitution. The Commissioner must be a citizen and resident of the state.

The State Board of Education included the basic responsibilities, duties and desired characteristics of a qualified applicant in the job posting. At the last board meeting, members discussed the timeline for hiring a new commissioner, hoping that a new commissioner would be hired by the end of the calendar year.
Completed application packets and nominations must be received by October 19.
