New workshop: Rev up your salary committee

Date: 9/28/2012

Do you want to get involved with your district's salary committee, but are you unsure of how to start? Is your school district's salary committee inactive?

Sign up for MSTA's new Salary Committee Workshop. This new program will take place at three locations this fall, with plans to expand next year.

The new workshops seek to give participants a view of the salary committee process before getting to the budgeting process. The salary committee workshops will help participants make sure to do the right legwork.

"This will walk them through the steps they need to go through before they come to a salary workshop," says MSTA's Salary Consulting Manager Melissa Lorts. "This is what they should be doing to prepare before actually going in and asking for money."

Participants will learn how to start a salary committee, or how to reinvigorate an existing salary committee, and how to prepare for negotiations with administrators or school boards.

MSTA's salary workshops in the spring provide participants with an analysis of their district's finances and whether there is money available for teacher raises. Salary committee members can then use that information for salary requests during budget season.

Salary committee workshops are scheduled for Oct. 11 at Library Station in Springfield; and Oct. 30 at the Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center. An Oct. 23 workshop in Butler has been canceled.

Workshops are free. To register visit www.msta.org/events.
